Kuwait-flagged tanker struck in the Strait of Hormuz, five Indians rescued

The MT Kazimah III, a Kuwait-flagged tanker, was hit by a projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday. India's mission in Oman said it coordinated the rescue of five Indian crew members, all of whom were brought ashore safely with Omani help. The embassy gave no further detail on who fired or how badly the vessel was damaged.

Delhi Police register three FIRs over the Jantar Mantar protest

Delhi Police filed at least three FIRs on Saturday over Friday's attempt by students, Opposition leaders and civil society groups to gather at Jantar Mantar and demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Two were registered at Parliament Street and one at Connaught Place under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, for disobeying prohibitory orders. No person or organisation has been named.

UAE treats the flydubai cockpit axe assault as a terrorist attack

The UAE's prosecutor general said the co-pilot of Wednesday's flydubai flight to Tel Aviv attacked the captain with a crash axe and tried to seize control, and that the state is treating it as an attempted terrorist act. The co-pilot, named as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, was restrained by passengers after the aircraft carrying 182 people went into a sharp descent and diverted to Saudi Arabia.

Five workers killed as a boiler explodes at a Sri City plant

A boiler exploded in the early hours of Saturday at Till Healthcare's tablet manufacturing plant in the Sri City special economic zone in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district, killing at least five night-shift workers and seriously injuring more than ten. The explosion set off a fire inside the unit. State minister Nara Lokesh called the deaths deeply tragic; the cause is still being examined.

FSSAI declares a Nestle dairy whitener sample unsafe after lab analysis

A sample of Nestle India low-fat dairy whitener collected from The Lalit hotel in Connaught Place was found substandard and unsafe by a food analyst's laboratory, the food regulator said. Bharat Hotels, which runs The Lalit, has been issued a notice and told to stop selling the product immediately. It may appeal against the analyst's report within the period allowed under the 2006 Act.

Foreign portfolio investors turned net sellers in September after buying Rs 20,200 crore in July and Rs 29,630 crore in August, depository data showed. The reversal came as the Nifty 50 and the Sensex each fell almost 6 per cent. Sebi chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said onboarding had already been eased and that further measures were being worked out with the RBI.

D-Mart revenue rises 18.4 per cent to Rs 19,206 crore

Avenue Supermarts reported standalone revenue from operations of Rs 19,206.18 crore for the quarter ended 30 September, against Rs 16,218.79 crore a year earlier and Rs 18,343.49 crore in the June quarter. The Damani-promoted chain ended the quarter with 518 stores, including one in Sanpada that is shut for reconstruction. The filing is a quarterly business update; full results follow later.

Trump rules out a US diesel export ban after European pledges

Asked at the White House whether Washington would restrict diesel shipments, the president said there would be no export ban, pointing to European commitments to put more fuel into the market. He said he had personally asked Europe to raise supply and predicted crude would fall back to pre-conflict levels once the fighting with Iran ended. US diesel averaged $6.37 a gallon on Friday.

The agency filed its chargesheet before a special court in Mumbai, naming Reliance Communications, Reliance ADA Group executives Amitabh Jhunjhunwala and Vishwas Joshi, and P Venugopal, then chief investment officer at LIC. It alleges LIC subscribed to Rs 1,500 crore of RCom debentures in 2012 on serious misrepresentations. The charges include criminal conspiracy, cheating and offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

State health officials counted more than 250 locally acquired dengue cases this year, most of them in Hillsborough County around Tampa. That is the highest annual total for any mainland state since at least the 1940s, beating Florida's own 2023 record of just under 200. G7 agrees to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products

France, holding the rotating presidency, announced the release after a videoconference led by Emmanuel Macron. A frontloaded, substantial tranche of diesel starts within 20 days and the rest flows over four months. It follows a March commitment by IEA members to release 426 million barrels. US diesel hit a record $6.52 a gallon on 22 September and European prices are also at records.

Ten captive-bred Great Indian Bustards released into the Thar Desert

The birds are being freed at Ramdevra in Jaisalmer on 3 October and at Sudasari in the Desert National Park on 4 October, with Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav attending. They were trained in a purpose-built tunnel at the conservation breeding centre to live away from people. The Wildlife Institute of India is supervising; the original plan to release them in Kutch was dropped.

The BC Prosecution Service approved charges on 1 October against Sanket Singla, Sahil, Simranjeet Singh, Harsh and Jagdeep Singh, aged 21 to 24, after an RCMP investigation begun in June 2025 into extortion demands on an auto dealership. Kharge seeks Rs 3,705 crore from the Centre for Karnataka's drought

In a letter dated 1 October, the Congress president asked the prime minister to release assistance under the National Disaster Relief Fund and to order fresh ground assessment, citing state estimates of Rs 18,748 crore in crop losses across 19.52 lakh hectares. He said 101 sub-districts are already declared drought-hit and asked that more be added, along with drinking-water measures.

Plague death at an Irkutsk research institute puts 200 people in isolation

Surgeons remove a 1-kg hairball from a nine-year-old girl in Kerala

The girl was admitted to NIMS Medicity in Neyyattinkara with persistent abdominal pain and vomiting. Ultrasound and CT scans showed severe intestinal obstruction and an endoscopy confirmed a mass of hair in the stomach and small intestine, removed in a complex operation led by paediatric surgeon Biju I G Nair. A Nature Astronomy study from the Globe Institute at the University of Copenhagen finds at least 75 per cent of Earth's mass came from two young protoplanets that themselves grew by sweeping up pebbles, with planetesimals contributing up to the rest. Delhi says 100 acres reclaimed across its three landfill sites

Chief minister Rekha Gupta reviewed work at Okhla and laid foundation stones for new processing facilities at Okhla, Ghazipur and Singhola. She said 100 acres have been cleared across the three sites in 18 months, much of it now planted, and that nearly all legacy waste at Okhla predating January 2025 has been processed.
